Ranking Member Grijalva, Rep. Mike Thompson to Speak Against NRA Gun Silencer Bill Following Tuesday’s 10 a.m. Hearing
Washington, D.C. – Ranking Member Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), the former co-chairman of the Congressional Sportsman’s Caucus, are holding a press availability following tomorrow’s 10:00 a.m. Natural Resources Committee hearing on the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, which includes a bill by Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) known as the Hearing Protection Act that deregulates the purchase of gun silencers. Grijalva and Thompson will speak about the damage the National Rifle Association (NRA) has done to the cause of conservation and sportsmen’s access to public lands by turning the SHARE Act into a partisan referendum on gun and ammunition laws.
As McClatchy reported recently, the NRA has made the Hearing Protection Act “one of its top legislative targets” for the 115th Congress. The group’s involvement “might actually be hurting Duncan’s efforts to make the measure seem more like a common-sense salve than a red meat bid to the GOP base,” McClatchy reported – and yet Duncan believes the group’s backing for his effort “shows some credibility.”
At the event, Grijalva will discuss a CREDO Action petition already signed by more than 90,000 progressive activists across the country demanding that members of Congress stand up for their constituents’ safety, block the NRA’s legislative priorities and refuse to pass dangerous giveaways to the gun industry like the Hearing Protection Act.
Among other extraneous and controversial provisions, the SHARE Act also makes it harder for federal agencies to regulate the sale of armor-piercing rounds even though deer do not wear body armor and sportsmen do not use armor-piercing rounds to hunt.
“The NRA is taking the lead in promoting dangerous escalations of Donald Trump’s hate-filled agenda,” said CREDO senior campaign manager Heidi Hess. “Its reckless legislative priorities will make Americans less safe. The Hearing Protection Act must be blocked by every member of Congress who cares more about protecting his or her constituents than currying favor with the gun lobby.”
The SHARE Act is expected to receive a full Committee vote at a Sept. 13 markup.
