NRDems Forum: Black History Month Forum – February 26, 2020
On Friday February 26th, 2021 at 2:00 pm Eastern the House Committee on Natural Resources will host a Black History Month Forum to celebrate Black excellence in ocean policy. This forum will be livestreamed on the Committee’s Facebook live and YouTube pages.
Black Americans have made immense contributions to Ocean Science. Ernest Everett Just was the first marine biologist in American history. His presence in the field paved the way for Black role models such as Roger Arliner Young, the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Zoology; Samuel Milton Nabrit, who created more opportunities for Black scientists through civil rights campaigns; and Robert Kent Trench, who won the prestigious Miescher-Ishida Prize for his contribution to the field of Biology in 1994. Despite this rich history, Black Americans are still inadequately represented in Ocean Science.
For this Black History Month, the House Committee on Natural Resources will invite Black leaders in Ocean Science to share how Black scientist have progressed the field, and the need for more representation in this space.
