Oversight Hearing: Hearing on Evaluating Federal Offshore Oil and Gas Development on the Outer Continental Shelf

Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources Date: Wednesday, July 12, 2017 Time: 10:00 AM Location: Longworth House Office Building 1324

DEMOCRATIC TOP-LINE MESSAGES

  • Expanding offshore drilling to new areas is unsafe, unnecessary, and unwanted.
  • The tourism and fishing economies of the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, which depend on clean water and healthy beaches, are worth far more than whatever would be gained by needlessly drilling for oil and gas off those shorelines.
  • The Arctic is an exceptionally harsh and fragile ecosystem, and a major spill there could decimate wildlife and the local communities that depend on subsistence hunting to survive.
  • Far more jobs and long-term positive benefits will come from focusing on offshore wind and other offshore renewable energy technologies instead of oil and gas.
