Chair Grijalva, Sen. Udall to Lead Press Conference This Thursday Announcing Introduction of Hardrock Mining Reform Legislation

Washington D.C. – Chair Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) will announce the introduction of hardrock mining reform bills in the House and Senate at a press conference on Thursday, May 9, at 9:15 a.m. Eastern time on Capitol Hill. Energy and Mineral Resources Subcommittee Chair Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.), an original cosponsor of the House bill, and multiple conservation and business advocates will also speak in favor of modernizing the nation’s badly antiquated hardrock mining laws.

The event will be followed by a 10:00 a.m. House Natural Resources Energy and Mineral Resources subcommittee hearing on the newly introduced House bill and long overdue need to reform the Mining Law of 1872.

Regulation of hardrock mineral extraction in the United States has remained virtually unchanged since President Ulysses S. Grant signed the General Mining Act of 1872. Communities across the country are feeling the impact of this antiquated law – both economically and environmentally – and are calling for it to be updated. The bills from Grijalva and Udall would replace today’s obsolete law with a modern leasing system designed to protect American taxpayers and American public lands.
