Grijalva and Conservationist Jeff Corwin Hold Press Conference to Defend the Endangered Species Act from GOP Attacks

Washington, D.C. – To highlight the Republican assault on  the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and wildlife conservation, House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is holding a press conference with conservationist Jeff Corwin, host of ABC’s Ocean Treks with Jeff Corwin, tomorrow morning in Washington, D.C. The event is being held prior to a Committee hearing at 10 a.m. ET where five bills that aim to undermine aspects of the ESA will be debated. Mr. Corwin was invited by the Democrats to testify and is the sole scientist sitting on the panel.

The bills introduced aim to weaken the ESA, not to “reform” or “modernize” it as supporters of the legislation claim. Enacting these bills into law would drive the extinction of fish, wildlife, and plants in America and around the globe. The facts are not up for debate, the Act works – 99 percent of the species that have received ESA protection, like the bald eagle and the Florida manatee, are still with us today thanks to this important conservation law.

Since taking control of the House of Representatives in 2011, Republicans have introduced more than 200 pieces of legislation designed to undermine the ESA.
