Washington, D.C. – The Natural Resources Committee is hosting four livestreamed events next week.

Monday, July 13

Tuesday, July 14

On Tuesday, July 14, Rep. Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.), chair of the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources, will lead a hearing titled Energy Infrastructure and Environmental Justice: Lessons for a Sustainable Future, which will focus on the environmental and community impacts of fossil fuel infrastructure and avoiding the mistakes of the past as we build a more sustainable energy economy. The hearing comes shortly after a trio of major setbacks for fossil fuel pipelines in the Midwest and along the East Coast.

The hearing will examine how pipelines and other major projects damage public health and quality of life for communities in their path, who are often not adequately consulted before construction begins. Witnesses will discuss the importance of local input as the economy-wide transition away from fossil fuels gathers momentum.

On Wednesday, July 15, Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) will lead an online forum on the positive economic impacts of wildlife viewing in well-preserved landscapes and habitats around the country, using Colorado as a case study. The event will focus on the need to preserve viable outdoor recreation destinations, and on the impacts to habitats and the outdoor recreation industry of President Trump’s environmental policies.

Thursday, July 16

On Thursday, July 16, Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), chair of the Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States, will lead a hearing titled Native Youth Perspectives on Mental Health and Healing. The hearing will feature Native youth leaders from across the country highlighting the mental health impacts Native youth face in the United States, the effects of those impacts on their health, education and safety, and their ideas on how policy can reduce trauma and promote healing to protect Native lives.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, Native American and Alaska Native children and adolescents have the highest rates of lifetime major depressive episodes, substance use disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, intergenerational trauma, suicide and attachment disorders. These disparities have combined with the coronavirus pandemic to inflict disproportionately harmful impacts on tribal communities.
