Thursday, July 30

On Thursday, July 30, Chair Grijalva and Rep. A. Donald McEachin (D-Va.), coauthors of the Environmental Justice for All Act, will hold a livestreamed roundtable titled “Environmental Justice Now: Michigan” with several Michigan-based environmental justice advocates. Participants will discuss class- and race-based inequalities across the state and how the lawmakers’ bill – crafted with more than a year of public input – can empower Michiganders and make their lives healthier and safer from pollution.

The event is the beginning of a virtual multi-state tour by the lawmakers to advocate for the bill, which expands the Civil Rights Act to give disenfranchised communities more power to hold polluters accountable; increases public input on major decisions that affect them through the National Environmental Policy Act; and creates a new federal Interagency Working Group on Environmental Justice Compliance and Enforcement, among other measures. The bill is endorsed by a wide range of environmental justice and civil rights organizations.

Thursday’s speakers include:

  • Nayyirah Shariff, Director, Flint Rising
  • Justin Onwenu, Organizer, Sierra Club
  • Abdul El-Sayed, former Executive Director, Detroit Health Department
  • Theresa Landrum, 48217 Community Activist and Resident
