MEDIA ADVISORY: Chair Grijalva, Sen. Heinrich, Rep. Lowenthal to Hold Press Conference on Anniversary of 150-Year-Old Mining Law
Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern at the House Triangle of the U.S. Capitol, House Natural Resources Committee Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.), Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), and Rep. Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.) will hold an in-person press conference to discuss newly introduced legislation to reform the nation’s antiquated Mining Law of 1872.
Chair Grijalva and Sen. Heinrich introduced their House and Senate mining reform bills, both titled the Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act, on April 26, 2022. At the press conference, the lawmakers will discuss their legislation and the importance of reforming our 150-year-old mining law, especially given the increasing demand for critical minerals necessary for a clean energy transition. Rep. Lowenthal, Chair of the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources and original cosponsor on the House bill, will also join the press conference, along with organizations supportive of the legislation.
Modernizing our mineral leasing system will address major environmental justice concerns, protect our public lands, and ensure a fair return for American taxpayers. The full text of Chair Grijalva’s Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act is available here and a fact sheet on the bill is available here. The full text of Sen. Heinrich’s Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act is available here.
