Chair Grijalva Releases “The Sporting Digest,” a New Series Devoted to News for Outdoor Enthusiasts and Conservation Policy Watchers

Washington, D.C. – Natural Resources Committee Chair Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) released a new Medium series today titled The Sporting Digest. The first installment investigates how S.47, commonly known as the “public lands package,” impacts sporting, outdoor recreation, and our economy. The bill, which the House recently passed in a historic vote, includes permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), among many other major conservation priorities, and will be a major boon to outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists when President Trump signs it into law.

The Sporting Digest, which follows in the tradition of the Committee’s Wasted Resources and Watchdog series, will provide clear, accessible, objective analysis of how actions in Congress impact environmental quality, access to public lands, and our ability as Americans to enjoy our shared natural resources. As today’s first installment notes, the passage of the public lands package, formally titled the “John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management and Recreation Act,” was the result of years of bipartisan efforts to protect the public lands we hold dear.

Grijalva released a Feb. 26 statement cheering the bill’s passage in the House: “This bill represents Congress at its best and truly gives the American people something to be excited about. It’s a massive win for the present and future of American conservation. Everyone from inner cities to suburbs to rural communities wins when we work together to preserve the outdoors.”

The shared values of sporting, outdoor recreation, and conservation run deep in American culture and continue to inform the work of the Natural Resources Committee. Future installments of The Sporting Digest will explore policies, ideas and debates that shape outdoor recreation – both its current legal landscape and emerging questions for the future.
