House Passes the PROMESA Act with Bipartisan Support
Washington, D.C. – The PROMESA Act (H.R. 5278), the bill aimed to help Puerto Rico restructure its debt and tackle the fiscal crisis, passed on the House Floor today with bipartisan support.
“I’m relieved the PROMESA Act passed with bipartisan support, but I’ve been clear throughout this process that this is not the bill I or Democrats would have written,” Grijalva said. “The legislation was a compromise, a bipartisan effort, aimed to provide the 3.5 million American citizens living in Puerto Rico the assistance they deserve.
“I still think the bill fails to provide enough material assistance to the people of Puerto Rico, the Oversight Board is too powerful and the provisions undermining minimum wage and the overtime rules don’t belong in the bill. Like many of my colleagues, I had to accept that there was no other avenue available to address the debt crisis in Puerto Rico. Compromises had to be made to get the bill through a Congress we do not control.
“We overcame a major hurdle today. The Administration and both parties worked in a bipartisan spirit to finalize this bill with the common goal of finding a viable path forward for the families living on the island. That in itself is a considerable victory. Now the work begins in the Senate.”
