House Republicans Reject Efforts to Support Funding for Natl. Park Service Centennial Act
Washington, D.C. – Ranking Member Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) expressed disappointment with House Republicans' unwillingness to compromise during today’s House Natural Resources Committee markup on Chairman Rob Bishop’s (R-Utah) National Park Service (NPS) Centennial Act, a bill that would allow the Service to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
House Republicans rejected two Democratic amendments, introduced by Grijalva and Rep. Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.), that would have provided the needed funding for the NPS. Democrats on the Committee were clear that funding the park service should be national priority.
“Congress should be supporting the National Park Service by providing the funding and updated authority it needs to prepare for a second century,” Grijalva said. “It’s unfortunate that even with the simplest and most bipartisan of bills, we can’t seem to compromise. The two Democratic amendments introduced today would have provided the necessary funding to help the country celebrate the Service’s 100th anniversary.”
“House Republicans are failing to listen to the millions of Americans that visit and enjoy our national parks and federal lands across the nation by failing to approve the funds needed to conserve our parks. The American people are paying the price for Republicans' refusal to compromise.”
