Markey Statement on Upton/Inhofe Dirty Air Bill
WASHINGTON (February 2, 2011) – Responding to reports that Republicans in the House and Senate intend to introduce draft legislation restricting the ability of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to limit dangerous carbon pollution and promote clean energy solutions, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) the top Democrat on the Natural Resources Committee and a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, issued the following statement:
“The groundhog didn’t see his shadow today, signaling that spring is on the way. However, Republicans in Washington seem bound and determined to deliver an interminable winter of environmental and economic discontent for Americans who want cleaner air, water and more clean energy jobs created here in America.
“With enactment of the Clean Air Act forty years ago, we took bold action to control the pollution that was choking the life out of our water, our air, and our citizens. America would look very different today had we not taken these steps. With this latest short-sighted bill proposed by House Republicans, they have chosen to stand with the polluters. Republicans are on the wrong side of history and are ignoring the lessons learned by our successes in using the Clean Air Act to cut harmful pollution. If this legislative proposal is successful, forty years from now, the costs of inaction to cut pollution will be an unhealthier economy, environment, and American public.
“I will oppose this legislation at every turn, and will continue to join my Democratic colleagues to find common-sense solutions that will create American jobs, reduce pollution and promote a healthier economy and environment for the next 40 years and beyond.”
