New Poll Reveals Arizona Voters Strongly Support the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument
Washington, D.C. – Ranking Member Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) is participating in a media call on Thursday afternoon to discuss a new public survey showing strong support from Arizona residents for the creation of a new national monument to protect the Grand Canyon watershed and honor the region’s rich Native American history and culture. Grijalva will be joined by the Grand Canyon-Associated Tribes and other supporters of the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument Act, a landmark bill he introduced in November to protect approximately 1.7 million acres of federal land surrounding Grand Canyon National Park.
The survey, completed by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates, assessed registered Arizona voters’ views on land protection around the Grand Canyon. Highlights from the survey include:
- Overwhelmingly high voter support for establishing the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument, with 80 percent backing its creation. This support is strong across political parties, demographic groups and geographical regions, with majority support in every major subgroup – including sportsmen, rural residents, and younger and middle-income voters.
- Nearly half of Arizona voters (48%) said more needs to be done to protect the land, air and water around Grand Canyon National Park. Right now, just 5 percent say that “too much” is being done. The proportions are similar in the 1st Congressional District, where 47 percent say more needs to be done and just 8 percent say “too much” is being done to protect the land, air and water around Grand Canyon National Park.
