Ranking Member Huffman Blasts Trump Admin for Rescinding EPA’s Landmark Endangerment Finding
Washington, D.C. – Today, Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) issued the following statement after the Trump administration moved to repeal the EPA’s 2009 Clean Air Act endangerment finding — the bedrock scientific determination that greenhouse gases pose a threat to public health and the environment:
“Rescinding EPA’s climate pollution Endangerment Finding is like taking the batteries out of your smoke alarm because it keeps going off: it might stop the noise, but it sure won’t stop the fire.
“It’s a reckless move that will make Americans less safe and hurt our economy by slowing the growth of affordable clean energy and fueling the heat waves, storms, floods, and wildfires that threaten people’s homes and communities.
“The Endangerment Finding is rooted in law, grounded firmly in science, and has even passed muster at the Supreme Court. It is supported by volumes of evidence gathered over decades that show clearly the threat climate change poses to our lives and livelihoods.
“But why let pesky facts get in the way? Lying to the American people is Donald Trump’s favorite pastime, followed closely by lining the pockets of the Big Oil billionaires who bankrolled his campaign. Today’s action to prop up dirty, expensive fossil fuels gives him a two-for-one.
“As we saw with his Big, Ugly Bill, under Trump and Republicans, the rich get richer and everyone else suffers. The only beneficiaries here are the fossil fuel tycoons raking in record profits as climate disasters ravage American communities.”
