Ranking Member Huffman Statement on House Republicans Voting to Uphold Trump's Retaliation
Washington, D.C. – Today, House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) released the following statement after House Republicans killed two of their own party's bills and voted to uphold President Trump's vetoes of two bipartisan bills that had passed both chambers unanimously:
"Congratulations to House Republicans on completing their transformation of the United States Congress into the American Duma. They just proved they'd rather be Trump's doormats than do their jobs and serve their constituents.
"These two bills had already passed Congress unanimously — every single Republican voted for them — and now those same Republicans turned around and killed their own colleagues' legislation because Trump threw a tantrum.
"Let's be clear about what happened here: Trump vetoed clean drinking water for 50,000 rural Coloradans to punish Lauren Boebert for defending the victims of his pedophile pal Jeffrey Epstein, and to exact revenge on the state of Colorado over his obsession with losing the 2020 election. Trump vetoed flood protection for a Native American tribe over an unrelated environmental lawsuit that challenged his “Alligator Alcatraz” debacle, punishing them for defending their ancestral lands. He will always put his fragile ego over the American people, but that much we already knew. What we learned today is that the overwhelming majority of House Republicans are happy to be pawns in his craven personal vendettas--even when innocent people are hurt, and even when it makes them look spineless and soulless.
"The MAGA majority talks a big game about fighting for rural America and respecting tribal sovereignty. Today they showed us exactly who they are. When Trump says jump, House Republicans slam their heads into the ceiling in the rush to reverse their own votes and betray their oath of office."
