Chair Grijalva Statement on Sen. Manchin Decision to Halt Climate Plan Negotiations

Washington, D.C. – Natural Resources Committee Chair Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) today issued the following statement on Senator Joe Manchin’s (D-W.V.) decision to halt negotiations on energy and climate-related investments in Democrats’ reconciliation package:

“Like most Americans right now, I am sickened that the changing whims of one man could put the very near future of our country, our planet, and our health and safety on the brink. I think it’s shortsighted at best, reckless endangerment at worst. But while Senator Manchin will undoubtedly be the poster child for willful inaction on climate change, let us not forget that there are 50 other current sitting Senators who have refused to even consider to come to the table with a single real solution on climate. As we watch the most existential crisis of our time worsen before our eyes, the Republicans’ entire platform has been to obstruct, spew faux outrage, and recite the talking points of the very industries that are killing us.

“I am confident that the party of inaction will prove—and is already proving—to be on the wrong, and fatal, side of history on climate change. It’s nothing short of a shame that Republicans have given us no other option but to simply urge the White House to take any action they can to slow down emissions and transition us to the clean energy future as soon as possible. We owe it to all Americans, but especially future generations, to do something and to do it immediately.”
