Chair Grijalva: Trump’s Expected Failure to Meaningfully Address Climate Change Underscores Why We’re Holding Our Wednesday Morning Hearing

Washington, D.C. – Chair Raúl M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) said that President Trump’s expected failure to meaningfully address climate change in tonight’s State of the Union underscores the pressing need for congressional action and throws a spotlight on the Natural Resources Committee hearing at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time on how climate change has impacted communities across the country. That hearing – which will feature testimony from Gov. Roy Cooper (D-N.C.) and Gov. Charlie Baker (R-Mass.), among other witnesses – will be webcast live at http://bit.ly/2UD53Hp.

“This president and his associates have spent two years mocking science, lying to the public and leaving our environmental future in the hands of polluting fossil fuel companies,” Grijalva said today. “The president will say nothing valuable tonight about climate change or its impacts on our communities. Democrats are here to force the conversation he wants to avoid and set the strong climate policies our people demand. That starts Wednesday, and it continues all month in the Natural Resources Committee.”

The Committee recently announced a monthlong series of hearings on climate change at both the full Committee and subcommittee level. You can learn more about that schedule at http://bit.ly/2GdsmEm.

The Committee released a video on Feb. 4 featuring Chair Grijalva and members of the Committee speaking on the need for a month of climate change hearings. Trump recently told the Washington Post, “One of the problems that a lot of people like myself, we have very high levels of intelligence but we’re not necessarily such believers. As to whether or not it’s man-made and whether or not the effects that you’re talking about are there, I don’t see it.”
