“As we close out Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate the deep historical and cultural legacy that Indigenous peoples have created and passed down since time immemorial,” said Ranking Member Grijalva. “But we also use this time to reflect on this country’s long history of repeatedly threatening this legacy through cruel, oppressive policies and actions.
“With this resolution, we must reinvigorate our commitment to uphold our trust and treaty responsibilities, honor tribal sovereignty, and elevate efforts to preserve Indigenous history, culture, and knowledge. Yesterday, my colleagues and I heard from a panel of experts who spoke to the importance of fully resourcing tribal historic and cultural preservation efforts so that our country’s story represents the diversity of all Americans. I look forward to continuing this conversation with tribal communities and my colleagues in Congress to ensure that Native American heritage is protected and celebrated for generations to come.”
Yesterday, Ranking Member Grijalva hosted a roundtable titled, “Strengthening Historic and Cultural Preservation” to discuss how Congress can ensure that preservation efforts are better supported and resourced to protect the diverse historic and cultural legacy of all Americans.
